Somehow summer has already escaped us and we’re at the start of fall. With the temperatures cooling down (in some places more than others), we have all the autumn styles and color palettes to look forward to. Of them all, crochet textiles and garments have become a rising trend as it made a major comeback during lockdown. With more free time during COVID and an increasing awareness of slow fashion, many creatives have taken it into their own hands (quite literally) to restart or kick start their love for handmade crafts and fashion. When a lot of people think about crochet they think about blankets and hats made by their beloved grandmothers that may not have held up to fashion trends over time. Here is our list of 5 crochet artists to follow on Instagram for their alternative and innovative takes on crocheting fashionably:

Quirky, eccentric and still maintaining a childlike playfulness, @clownprojects is known for the iconic “Franken Cardi” constructed in patchwork fashion with different crocheted panels that each boast a unique design. There are also adorable card holders and hats that sprawl across their feed. If you’re looking for some color inspiration and just some very solid adorable-ness, this is one to check out.

Simple in color but complex in construction, @moliidae boasts some very intricately designed crochet garments made from a largely neutral color palette. The somber color choices further emphasize the structural elements of each piece, ranging from repeated 3D patterns to repeated swan motifs. Elegant and intriguing, a designer to follow for their play on texture.

@KID.CROCHET

A master of crocheted sweaters and sweater vests, @kid.crochet is also a colorful crochet artist who at times uses patches and crocheted motifs to create a visceral experience of crochet garments. The pieces stand out, almost as if coming out of the screen with its array of bold color and fascinating motifs. Inventive, statement pieces that are unapologetic about experimenting with color and texture. The feed also features several menswear and amigurumi crocheted pieces.

A feed sprinkled with bags, hats, and several oversized sweaters, @elfindom provides a feminine touch to crocheted garments whilst maintaining an exploratory attitude towards crochet. The particular integration of textured yarn to create accessories is underscored in the resultant myriad of similarly constructed pieces that yield differing visual effects - and thus emotional resonances. Earthy tones woven into fashion items with yarn in mohair, boucle, and a whole host of materials, this feed entangles nature with crochet.

Time to showcase a pastel, kidcore crochet artist who has come out with many crochet patterns for original patches, trinket dishes, and of course, vests. Delicate, dream-like colors spread amongst cropped sweater vests and cardigans find koi fish patches peeking out from beside heart-shaped gingham coasters. A crochet artist who clearly knows the craft, @wobbleblobbe has found a way to incorporate many motifs from nature (bees, honeycomb structures, frogs, and mushrooms, to name a view) and make them part of a pastel, crocheted world
