NYFW: The Return of Imitation of Christ SS21

Imitation of Christ SS21

When Imitation of Christ debuted in 2000, they were like the rebellious big sister that didn’t think the cafeteria (Bryant Park let’s say) was cool enough for what they had in mind. A fashion show once took place in an East Village funeral parlor. Now twenty years later, Tara Subkoff revives the brand since she was inspired by this new youth generation, the newfound heroes fighting for civil rights and global climate change. Imitation of Christ was in its own way the Gen Z of fashion back in the early aughts.

For the spring-summer collection, the three minute film presents Los Angeles female skateboarders who run the skatepark with their go for it coolness each in IOC looks. These young women are fearless, calm and brave, ready to fight the good fight.

SSENSE GLOBAL

IOC was one of the earliest upcycling adopters in the fashion industry. Sustainability was always part of the brand’s vision and business plan, every piece of IOC was handsewn in New York City. This is a welcome return for Subkoff’s creative ingenuity in a time where so many brands are getting things wrong, IOC was the one brand that perhaps twenty years ago was doing it right all along.

Imitation of Christ collection is available exclusively at The RealReal with portion of sales to be donated to Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future.
