Films We Wish Had a Sequel

The Royal Tenenbaums

We are not up for reboots, we want a sequel. Turns out we still need some kind of closure from where we had left off. Not to say that these films ended poorly, it’s just we can’t help but wonder what happened to these lovable characters and their lives? When a film is so well made, you can’t help but want more.

BABY BOOM

This 1987 film is about a single woman who gives up her high-paid executive position at a Manhattan marketing firm in order to take care of a baby that she inherited. She moves to upstate New York and somehow starts her own baby food brand. Diane Keaton’s character arc as well as the plot can still ring true to modern day, except instead of juggling boardroom meetings, it would be Zoom calls and Zoom pre-school. Baby Boom as a film can still hold up, since we are still asking the undying question, can a woman really have it all?

SOMEWHERE

Of all the Sofia Coppola films, this is probably the one that needs a sequel considering the ending (no spoilers). A Hollywood actor gets to know his young daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) better while “living” at the illustrious Chateau Marmont. We see Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) drift along his career as a celebrity actor and when Cleo arrives back into his life, he begins to ponder, well everything about his life, personal and professional. It may sound bland, but it’s actually more relatable than we give it credit. I’d like to see how Cleo turned out as a daughter of a famous dad, she didn’t strike me as the type to follow in the family business. And well, Johnny Marco had a lot going for him, we’ve all seen this journey from actor to celebrity to whatever comes next, what path did he actually choose?

THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS

I go back and forth with this one, since it remains to be a Wes Anderson classic, but can never help thinking about Margot, Richie, Chaz and his sons. I even wonder about Eli Cash and if he ever got the rehabilitation he needed in order to write another best selling book. The urban fantasy world created by Anderson for the Tenenbaums, along with its charmed, dry and witty storybook plots and made for Pinterest film sets are all reasons we deserve a sequel.

MISTRESS AMERICA

An indie comedy about two girls living in New York City, back at the last days of old New York City. Mistress America is directed by Noah Baumbach and stars Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke as the two main characters who try to figure out the next steps to their lives. Tracy (Lola Kirke) is a college freshman who can’t yet find her own set of friends, her people and then she meets up with Brooke, an atypical “girl about town” with loads of friends. It’s a big-sister movie that if you’ve ever looked up to someone like Brooke whose life is constant novel fodder, then it’s very easy to relate to Tracy. I’d love to know what Tracy is doing now, perhaps as the next Joan Didion? And maybe Brooke finally launched her own goop-like empire?
