The past year allowed many of us to get better acquainted with the creative sides of our personalities, so it only makes sense that we would come together again with a new love for artistic spaces, outlets for the pent up creativity that we developed during time spent alone.

Art fulfills us and so does company, so how do we integrate the arts into our social lives? Indulging our inner artists can mean more than gallery hopping and mastering crafts and skills.

Here’s where live art comes in.

With America’s reopening has come a new popularization of creative night (and day) life that allows for complete social and artistic experiences. We’re all familiar with live music, but creation spaces like @portals.la take performance to a level that many of us have never explored with the integration of live art into social events. Instead of just looking at a finished product in a gallery, consumers in these types of spaces can see creativity in motion, and even be a part of the art.

Make no mistake, immersive art experiences in general aren’t brand new. For the past 10 years, the well known arts group Meow Wolf based in Santa Fe has been bringing people in to experience an entire world of art, complete with shows, drinks and art as far as the eye can see.

However, a demand for smaller-scale creative spaces like this has grown recently, with collectives popping up in major cities as more people lean into their creativity. The best part? Everyone does it a little differently.

It can take a bit of sleuthing to find the smaller spaces, but a quick dive on Instagram will reveal countless venues and events to experience.

If you’re not in a city or you don’t have access to these spaces, here’s how you and your friends might recreate this for yourselves…

  1. Invite a bunch of people over, the more the merrier.

  2. Someone you know would probably love the chance to perform live music.

  3. Your artistic friends might also want to share their work.

  4. Find a creative project you all can pursue together.

  5. Put together a beautiful space with your coziest decorations.

  6. Make some amazing drinks.

  7. Have a good time.
