My Vision Board Under Review

Dear city Girl: vision board by Elena Chen

I’m not especially one for rituals in a traditional sense (though I am convinced by the evidence supporting their importance and how there is truly a dearth of such anchoring activities in the modern age) but if there is a ceremony, a rite of passage, that I traverse every year, that’s the one of creating a Vision Board. The term seems to have lost its luster and I agree, everyone has given their take on one and the whole idea of “manifesting” can come across a bit sus but research in the power of Vision-based approaches are proving to be favorable. I thought I’d share and go through my 2025 Vision Board I put together at the beginning of this year to see how much I have moved towards these goals by mid-year and if my one time session putting it together was effective enough to move me towards them. There are many enjoyable experiences to creating a Vision Board, from research to reflection, curating and specifying for yourself what it is that makes life meaningful, and to finally see it come to fruition because your being and mind work for what it is you have directed yourself towards - catharsis.

I broadly split the board into categories and then gave up on really having super blocked out sections that were clearly divided and added some vibe + feeling images that would inspire me when I looked at them and represented my aspiration of getting closer to those feelings.

When I first started compiling images, all sourced from my Pinterest boards so I know these are visuals I have already connected with, I thought I wanted an extremely pristine, hyper-curated vision of specified tasks and activities but it evolved into the “work-in-progress” version it is and I’m happy with it especially because one of my goals this year is to better sit with uncertainty.

There is a large section dedicated to Fiber because the year started with many crochet and knit orders from my shop. I did come some way with it since I had several finished objects this first half of year that have come close in style or colorway to the images I have selected here. For some other projects, I already have the yarn I just need to cast them on ✨

Something I’m seeing here after 6 months is that I am no longer motivated to operate a fiber art business selling finished garments. Perhaps one day when I am more experienced and I can write patterns or dye yarn I could think about transitioning into these spaces but currently I want to knit because I’m casting on projects that make sense to me.
