I Started Something New. You Should Too.

by Azucena Melchor

Among the many lessons that this past year taught me was that it’s always a good idea to put in effort for yourself, so in honor of life starting to feel a little bit more normal, I decided to change up my routine again and start something new. Here’s why you should too. 💁🏻

As things start back up again, I won’t be surprised if we all overlook self care a little bit in favor of whirlwind schedules and busy social calendars. So, in this in-between-period before life really gets crazy, it seems like the perfect time to build habits — strictly for our own selves — that we can keep up later on.

The fresh habit I needed was a consistent yoga practice, so I enrolled in the June iteration of Yale graduate and professional mover Cami Arboles’ MINDBODYSPIRIT Collective, a yoga and pole community I had come across on Instagram. As a member, I gained access to three weeks of daily livestream yoga classes, a library of past recordings and a wealth of information and journaling exercises. Most important to me though was the community of instructors, other women and non-binary folks doing this every day alongside me, just one WhatsApp message away.

For those of us who struggle to go through with projects that are just for our own good (myself included), it’s worlds easier to keep going when there’s a community surrounding us, when there’s accountability. You can never have too many people cheering you on!! Even if I might not be able to enroll in MBSC every month, I still will have made important connections and built a vital foundation of knowledge. Without a community, I don’t know if I would have lasted a week. With its support, I see myself continuing to grow my yoga knowledge into the foreseeable future.

I would encourage everyone to find groups like the MINDBODYSPIRIT Collective to try something new with, but if that’s not your vibe I would absolutely still vouch for learning a skill on your own. After a confusing, out-of-the-ordinary year, it has been exactly the exercise in healthy discipline that I needed, but most of all, it’s just been really fun.

P.S. If you need some inspiration, my personal list of things to do more of includes sewing, cooking, painting, guitar, learning a language and the list goes on.
