What to Netflix: Cutie and the Boxer
A documentary film for true artists, Cutie and the Boxer focuses on a 40-year marriage of two struggling artists in New York City. Produced and directed by Zachary Heinzerling and starring the main characters, boxing painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko.
This Oscar nominated documentary takes us into the everyday life of the artist couple whose work plays a major role and at times a hindrance in their marriage. Their "meet-cute" in the city story is as romantic as old-world love stories go, girl meets boy, boy falls in love with girl at speed lightening. At some point in the film, you start to recognize how Noriko's personal and professional sacrifices are indeed of passion for her husband and family. Then, her work becomes more of importance or at least a priority as they reach the golden age of their married lives. It is a charming introspection of two people who devote themselves to not just their work or their artist lifestyle, but their real undying love for one another. And it is also a wonderful story of a woman re-identifying herself as an artist.
